Benchmarks

Benchmarks are what trigger automation in Groundhogg. They are essential to providing a cohesive and automated user experience for your customers.

Groundhogg provides an extensive list of default benchmarks as well as an API to add custom benchmarks.

What is a benchmark?

A benchmark can also be called a trigger or goal. Essentially it is something that a contact does that you want to invoke an automated response.

For example: If john fills out a form (benchmark) then send a welcome email (action).

When do I use them?

You will want to use a benchmark whenever you want a contacts’ actions to invoke a response, or stop an automation sequence.

Benchmarks must always be used to start a funnel. Otherwise no contacts will be able to enter a funnel.

When can a benchmark be triggered?

Benchmarks can be used several places throughout a funnel.

At the start of a funnel.

If a contact triggers a benchmark at the beginning of a funnel, then that contact will immediately enter the funnel.

You can have several benchmarks with different criteria at the start of the funnel next to each other. If one is triggered then the contact will skip the others and start the proceeding automation.

In the middle of a funnel.

Any contacts already in a funnel can further trigger benchmarks deeper in the funnel.

However, contacts which have not triggered any initial starting benchmarks will not trigger further benchmarks in the funnel.

Similar to starting benchmarks, you can have several benchmarks next to each other and triggering any one of them will launch proceeding automation.

If any actions are scheduled that is preceding the benchmark that is triggered then those actions will be skipped and will not run.

At the end of a funnel.

Benchmarks can be placed at the end of a funnel to signify a funnel to be completed for a contact. For example a product purchased goal.

Similar to starting benchmarks, you can have several benchmarks next to each other and triggering any one of them end the funnel.

If any actions are scheduled to run and the benchmark is triggered, then they will be skipped.
